The Arts, Science, Design Exhibition was held on 12 and 13 October 2012 at Le Parvis des Sciences (MINATEC-Grenoble)

For its second edition, over 2,200 visitors attended the EXPERIMENTA at the Le Parvis des Sciences, at MINATEC, within the framework of the Isère Science Festival.
The three-day Arts, Science and Design Exhibition was attended by professionals and the general public with productions interfacing new technologies and artistic creativity.
Guided by project holders who will be present all through the show, visitors could discover and experiment with these one-of-a-kind devices adaptable to many different uses, from live performance design and graphic applications to visual arts, also involving pedagogical aspects.

Scientists from CEA Grenoble, students from Polytech Grenoble and entrepreneurs showcased their works of unique and interactive models.
Artists, counting among them dancers, jugglers, graphic artists and musicians who are enquiring about scientific research and technology and their applications, displayed their experiments : the Adrien M/Claire B Company, Clémence Gandillot, Michele Tadini, Yann Nguema.
Several actors at the interface of arts, science technology and design were invited to present their ongoing projects : Erasme, Multimedia Centre in Rhône, the Cité du Design and the Graduate School of Art and Design in Saint-Etienne, Grame, National Music Creation Centre in Lyon and the Atelier Arts Sciences, the event organiser.

The Atelier Arts Sciences team and Master 2 students in Scientific and Technical Communication at ICM, guided visitors in their exploration of the show.

This short piece will be presented within one of the installations at the exhibit,

XYZT Abstract Landscapes

. Choreography for one dancer unfolding in a tulle box with images moving in real-time, this work phase tackles the issue of ephemeral existence. It also reveals the trace, the sign of what has stopped existing, the remnant of what it used to be, the afterwards of the evanescence. Gathered around the box, spectators experience something well beyond a visual sensation of an enhanced reality. This is a multi-fold sensory experience mingling images, emotions, technology and movement.

La Terza Luce

- Phase 1 - Perception tests

Michele Tadini, composer and teacher of composition and technologies at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Lyon (CNSMD), Angelo Guiga, Researcher Technician, CEA Leti.

Winners of the A.R.T.S Prize 2011 by the Atelier Arts Sciences, Michele Tadini, Italian composer and professor of composition and music technology at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Lyon and Angelo Guiga from CEA Leti, want to test their research in public, leading up to their concert which will be first presented during the Rencontres-i, Arts Sciences Biennale 2013.
Several tests on blending luminous phenomena and sound were carried out using light as a composition element. Tests were based on more and more complex rhythmic sequences yielding to various possible ways of synchronisation and development.
Tests last for about fifteen minutes with the possibility of repeating them a second time to see if learning can improve perception.

Light becomes sound/Sound becomes light
Twofold research :
→ Searching for vocabulary and grammar of possible synaesthesia, to write a sort of
"Counterpoint User Manual". To see how, and to what extent, can we entwine the principles of counterpoint used in music ? How freely ?
→Searching for the effects of "luminous beats", the way they are involved in sound, with luminous vibrations and stroboscopic pulsations. A luminous "flanger" ; does it really exist ?

Terza Luce might open towards new dimensions of aural and visual perception, where light becomes sound and sound becomes light. A new form of existence, in which eyes can create acoustic illusions and ears can vibrate as light twinkles !
Visitors are invited to test and become aware of their own perception with regards to different concepts in composition applied to the relation between audio and light.

This two-part audio and visual installation has directly grown from a collaborative work associating two artists of light, Paolo Castagna and Gianni Ravelli with researchers at CEA. It sets light and music in a joint relationship within a perpetual movement between past and present.

2.700 Degrés Kelvin - Light From the Past

In the middle of a dark room, a tungsten filament light bulb, hanging from the ceiling. The filament slowly increases in intensity while the Prelude to Wagner’s "Lohengrin" rises in crescendo. Light is being born, obscurity gives place to daylight. Spectators are seated around this nucleus of light. As light fills the room, spectators are revealed to each other.

In a darkened room, a hanging panel compiled of a over a hundred dynamically controlled LEDs, reproduces all the shades of colours as described by the famous chromaticity diagram (mathematical representation of colours since 1931). Reds, yellows, blues and all other colours combine in the centre of the panel to produce white light, the symbol of infinity, which will attract and absorb us in an almost divine manner. It is the metaphor of repealed totality. The movement of colours is reproduced and amplified by Michele Tadini’s music. Spectators find themselves immersed in the focal point of a system of resonating sound and music.

A start-up company and a spin-off from CEA Grenoble, developing technology which transforms plastic, glass and paper surfaces to intelligent and interactive surfaces.

OLED technologies of tomorrow

CEA Leti researchers showcase a new generation of objects based on organic LEDs. These LEDs stem from OLED technology, a component allowing for the production of light. They present to visitors an OLED micro-display, a mini screen which can be integrated into mobile objects (video glasses, camera viewfinders...) and a new type of lighting enabled by a white electroluminescent OLED. Open your eyes wide !

Audio and Luminous Balloon (Ballon sonore et lumineux)

This one-meter-in-diameter stage balloon plays audio and luminous sequences according to its position on stage. The embedded control electronics are built inside an opaque cylinder on which they positioned the LED strips. The balloon transmits data to a base receiver connected to a computer, which will launch audio sequences in association with the balloon’s movement.

Acrylic digital painting

Matt B, emerging visual artist, creates several live performances blending materials (watercolour, brush, sponge) with innovative digital technology developed at CEA Leti. The results are hybrid works of art, at the boundary of materials and digitalization, questioning the status of the original works of art.

Webmat (Le Webnapperon)

Connecting older generations to social networks : imagine a hyper-local social network in which your grandmother, her neighbours or the caretaker of the building are members. The Webmat, thanks to RFID sensors, associates objects manipulated by someone with a specific content, transmitted according to his/her needs. Come and help us imagine how to use the internet for solidarity purposes. A co-design workshop conceived by the Ersame Experimental Multimedia Centre in collaboration with the European Host project supported by the Opac du Rhône.

Make yourself comfortable in this DIVAN (Dispositif d’Interaction et de Visualisation Audio Numérique) to discover novel ways of interaction at the core of contemporary artistic creation : interactive objects, motion and gesture capture, an interactive musical score with INSCORE software, sound processing and synthesising supported by FAUST, audio across a network thanks to JACK and JACKNET software, and all developed at GRAME.

Le Babyfoot 2.0 !

Games today are more and more individualistic and when they are designed for multiple players, it is usually via the Internet network. Babyfoot 2.0 is an updated version of this famous bar game. Keeping the "physical and simultaneous" multi-user aspect of the old version, Baby-foot 2.0 places the game mechanism in a video-gaming context and attempts to multiply friendly confrontational situations.
Further ongoing projects will be presented by students at the School of Design at St Etienin. ESADSE is part of the Cité du Design The Cité du Design is part of the fund-raising project to support research and creativity at the interface of Arts, Science and Design.

Oscar, the Digital Character (Oscar personnage numérique)

Roland Auzet and Olivier Pasquet will present the project "Aucun homme n’est un île" by Fabrice Melquiot. This show, a face-to-face encounter between an actor and a virtual character, fuses dramatic writing with musical theatre for young audiences, while enquiring about technologies deeply rooted in our society’s day-to-day life. First results will be showcased after assessing progress and the current state of the technical aspects of the project.

Le Parvis des sciences
Event in the framework of Science Festival 2012, where EXPERIMENTA is also invited. The event will include pedagogical events showcasing prototypes developed in laboratories, or models, designed by students. The "Le Parvis des Sciences" project is organised by MINATEC with the support of Atelier Arts Sciences/CEA Leti/CIME Nanotech/Grenoble INP Phelma/IMEP/INAC/LMGP/LTM.
