Pixel Motion is a research project focused on developing a sort of "table-cloth", consisting of luminous spots, deformable in space, which move very quickly or rather slowly within the range of a seven-meter vertical line. Under remote and direct control, Pixel Motion is the forerunner of a new type of this three-dimensional screen.
Two teams collaborate, one working on the mechanical aspects, the other one on the electronics aspects of the project. The latter one is responsible for controlling the energy-independent (battery) pixels that respond to radio commands.
Once the first prototype is designed and created, an intuitive control software needs to be developed. The software will have to generate the overall commands enabling the operation of the mechanical and the LED colour optics devices prompted by a series of images that the artist creates.
Pixel Motion will be an artwork installed above the musicians.
The result of the research conducted in 2012 and 2013 is a prototype involving various technologies developed at CEA.
